Home security safes

Get unrivalled fire and theft prevention for your valuables and irreplaceables

Despite all the advances in home security technology, the truth is that if a skilled thief wants to break into your house, there is little that can be done to stop it. Certainly having a security system in place will scare off many thieves, as well as limit the amount of time a thief has in your household before authorities arrive, but one of the only sure ways to protect your most precious belongings is to safely store them away in a home security safe or strongbox. Not only will they be all but impervious to thieves, they will also protect your valuables in case of a fire.

Smaller, portable safes are typically called strongboxes. These are routinely used to house jewelry, family albums, money or bonds and other small, precious heirlooms. Strongboxes usually require a key to access, though some can be found with alternate methods of entry access, including combination locks, electronic locks and time locks, which will only open at a preset time or day, and can generally be set to open in a 4 to 144 hour window.

The term safe is applied more commonly to a mounted or stationary strongbox, though these are often the same size as actual portable strongboxes. Safes are typically mounted in walls or floors, and concealed by household objects, like rugs for floor safes, or paintings or pictures for wall safes.

A safe that looks like a book? Say what?

Taking the concept of concealed safes even further are diversionary or hidden safes. These are crafted to resemble ordinary household items, such as a book, and then placed in inconspicuous locations, like a bookshelf for a book safe, where they are all but undetectable. The size of these safes is generally very small, and used only to store jewels or money.

Protect your firearms from falling into the wrong hands

Another household safe variant, and an important one is the gun safe. These safes are typically larger height wise, and are designed specifically for holding and locking away dangerous firearms. It is vital to not only keep firearms out of the hands of criminals, but also in protecting your children from playing with them and potentially harming themselves or others. As well as being fire and water resistant, most gun safes offer unique forms of access, including voice activation or fingerprint identification for further protection.

Many safes are fire resistant, and this is tested and measured on a timescale at 350o to accurately represent how long the safe can withstand the intense heat of a fire. Most safes promise anywhere from 1 to 4 hours of protection, with some offering even more.

Safes and strongboxes are cost effective, and can be found at many retailers nationwide, as well as specialty online stores. With or without a home security system, having a safe should be a necessary objective for anyone wanting to protect their valuables.
